Changes in brain activity in tactile stimulus therapy and Ruka Ruk therapy compared to mirror therapy in upper limb rehabilitation.
Pilátová, Kateřina ; Pánek, David (advisor) ; Pavlů, Dagmar (referee)
Title: Changes in brain activity in tactile stimulus therapy and Ruka Ruk therapy compared to mirror therapy in upper limb rehabilitation Objectives: The aim of the research project is to determine the changes in source electrical activity in sLORETA imaging using virtual reality operating on the principle of mirror therapy in the Ruka Ruk program and in conventional mirror therapy with tactile and haptic upper limb stimulation, compared to the resting state with open eyes. Methods: 12 healthy volunteers aged 23-42 participated in the experiment. The electrical activity of the brain was measured by scalp EEG in 7 phases of the experiment. Brain activity was measured at rest, during therapy with a sagittally placed mirror reflecting the movement of the right upper limb, and during therapy with a Leap motion sensor and a monitor with Ruka Ruk software, where participants saw only virtual upper limbs. The software mirrored the movement of the right upper limb on both virtual limbs. The electrical activity of the brain was sensed in three modifications in both types of therapy with the addition of a haptic or tactile left upper limb stimulus with a 10 cm wide foam cylinder. The order of modifications was randomized. The EEG record was processed and statistically evaluated in the sLORETA program, for...
Current physiotherapeutic approaches to the treatment of phantom pain after amputations
Posekaná, Pavlína ; Demeková, Júlia (advisor) ; Kálal, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis is carried out in the form of research with the aim to summarize phantom limb pain issues in physiotherapeutic practice. The general part describes the causes of phantom pain origin in central and peripheral nervous system and summarizes facts about amputation as a surgical intervention, it's classification and possible complications. It also summarizes all familiar pharmacological and nonpharmacological medical approaches used for phantom limb pain treatment. The main part is focused on three currently most effective methods used to treat phantom limb pain in physiotherapy - mirror therapy, virtual reality and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Next part of this thesis is two case interpretations of patients with lower limb amputation. Both patients undertake six weeks of mirror therapy and they described it's effect as positive. The efficiency has been evaluated according to a questionnaire.
Cerebral projection of haptic contact via sLORETA imaging
Dubová, Dita ; Pánek, David (advisor) ; Pavlů, Dagmar (referee)
Title: Cerebral projection of haptic contact via sLORETA imaging Objectives: The aim of this work is to evaluate changes in intracerebral source activity via sLORETA imaging during haptic stimulation of hands, while this contact is modified by a mirror illusion in comparison to calm state with open eyes. The work seeks to specify localization of such activity. Methods: Ten healthy volunteers aged 23-42 participated in the experiment. The electrical brain activity was detected with scalp EEG. The experiment was divided in 5 phases. First we measured the brain activity during calm state with open and with closed eyes, each for 5 minutes. Afterwards the subjects were seated at a table with a mirror occluding their right hand and reflecting their left hand. The brain activity was than recorded during 4 modifications of the experiment in duration of 2 minutes each. The first modification contained symmetrical haptic contact on both hands, modification 2 involved stimulation on the left hand only, during modification 3 the stimulus was applied on the right hand only and modification 4 had no tactile stimulus on neither side. The order of modifications for each individual was randomized. The EEG data were converted into sLORETA program, which allows to localize the source of the recorded brain activity...

Name: Karolína Kuželková Thesis supervisor: Mgr. Jaromíra Uhlířová Possibility of occupational therapy interventions in traumatology: Interventions for patients with the upper limb complex regional pain syndrome diagnosis Abstract of the Bachelor's Thesis: Aim of this bachelor's thesis is to outline the current situation of the treatment of patients with complex regional pain syndrome - CRPS emphasizing rehabilitation in the health care including occupational therapy. The theoretical part is introducing problems of the actual diagnosis of CRPS. It is also summarizing individual diagnostic and possible interventions applied in the Czech Republic and in abroad. Aim of the practical part was to find out what types of processes are currently used in patients in Prague centres for pain treatment and other rehabilitation institutes and whether they correspond with therapeutic processes described in the theoretical part. Another aim of the practical part of the bachelor's thesis was to find out whether any occupational therapists work in pain treatment centres and what is their scope of duties. It came out from held discussions that an occupational therapist is not usually a member of the interprofessional team in Prague pain treatment centres. Scope of occupational therapist`s duties has been so far described...
Use of Mirror therapy in patients after brain injury from the viewpoint of Occupational therapist
Vyhnálková, Lenka ; Rodová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Angerová, Yvona (referee)
The purpose of this Master thesis was to evaluate the effects of the Mirror program on upper- limb motor recovery, self-sufficiency and active range of wrist movement in patients after brain injury. It was included sixteen participants within maximal four months after stroke. Patients were separated into experimental and control group, both with eight members. Experimental group underwent Mirror therapy. Both group participated in a standard rehabilitation program included Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, physical therapy and movement practice on device. Experimental group patients additionally participated in Mirror therapy program for 30 mins, four times a week, for three weeks. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment, Functional Independence Measure and goniometric measurement of active movement were used to assess recovery of upper-limb movement. Mirror therapy improve upper-limb motor recovery in patients after brain injury. This research demonstrates it with significant difference between both groups, where the experimental group have improved (0,02). I have also proved Mirror therapy, when included in occupational therapy, improves the self-sufficiency of people with neurological deficit. Comparing the data from Functional Independence Measurement, I found the difference between groups statistically...

The Use of Mirror therapy in patients after stroke
Kovář, Jan ; Senohrábková, Eva (advisor) ; Drábová, Zuzana (referee)
BACHELOR THESIS ABSTRACT Title of bachelor thesis:The Use of Mirror therapy in patients after stroke Abstract: The topic of my bachelor thesis consisting of theoretical and practical parts relates to Mirror therapy and its use in patients after stroke from the physiotherapeutical point of view. The theoretical part is conceived as a review of the background art. I summarize present information concerning stroke and describe certain methods and concepts which have proved to be useful in the therapy of stroke patients. The Mirror therapy principle consists in observation of the unaffected limb in a mirror being vertically attached to the sagittal axis of the patient's body. Movements performed by the unaffected limb give illusion these are likewise performed by the impaired limb. While watching the reflection in the mirror, the mirror neurons system is activated. The system thereafter provokes activation of motor and somatosenzory areas of the cerebral hemispheres controlling the affected limb. Central nervous system effectively uses reparation neuroplasticity and provides both motor and senzory function improvement. In the Mirror therapy chapter, I focus on the principles of the method as well as on its therapeutic effects and ways of application. Results of present studies evaluating Mirror therapy efficacy...
